The Sewing Machine Factory presents

| ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE — DROP IN SUNDAYS |

SMF is proud to welcome our FIRST artists in residence, Nisha Patel and Mustafa Rafiq! Every Sunday November — April they will be available at Sewing for office hours from 1-5pm and the venue will be open for members of the community to make art, network with other artists, receive feedback + mentorship, as well as participate in workshops.

There will be space available for visual artists, tables to use laptops or write, as well as quiet areas to sit and relax. The bar will be open for drinks and sandwiches, and folks will be welcome to bring food and drinks downstairs from Mill Creek Cafe. As this is a group setting including different disciplines, we ask that musicians wanting to play instruments either plug into headphones, or inquire ahead if there is private space available to practice vocals/acoustic instruments.

*Please remember that this will not be a jam space, and that vulnerable folks who may not have safe spaces to practice music will be given priority.

The Sewing Machine Factory is an 18+ space but all ages events and artists consultations in Mill Creek Cafe will be available for youth artists.

She is currently working on a book of poetry through Glass Buffalo Publishing.

| MUSTAFA RAFIQ | FAMILY INJERA |

Mustafa Rafiq is a multidisciplinary artist based in Treaty 6 land in Edmonton, Alberta. Their primary focus recently has been in exploring feelings connected with diaspora, gender expression and alienation through sound art. They also promote shows under Sweaty Palms which is, at it's root, an organization based on amplifying comfort in community. Space to create and show work amongst your peers.

Mustafa also performs as a solo artist under the moniker of Family Injera, a project which has taken many forms. It moves from being a experimental ambient — traditional (Arabic/East Indian) guitar — collaborative free-form project. Preforming at festivals such as Big Fun (Respectfulchild), Sled Island (with Oren Ambarchi/Will Guthrie Duo, Aus/FR), Pretty Good Not Bad (with Jessica Moss) and Black Arts Matter Festival, Edmonton Poetry festival (collab with Nisha Patel) + numerous presentations at Mile Zero Dance for Dirt Buffet Cabarets, RV There Yet? and SubArctic Improvisations.
They have also been a part of installations at Nuit Blanche Edmonton, Mcluhan Arts House (for Lauren Crazybull's Artist Residency Showing) and various presentations at Mile Zero Dance and Good Women Dance Society.
