2018 marks New Music Edmonton’s 6th annual appearance at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. The NME Fringe Players showcase of local experimental music-making with a theme — The Sound of Words in a World of Sound — we will be presenting five hour-long shows as part of the 2018 Fringe Bring Your Own Venue. We have invited a fantastic group of Edmonton’s most adventurous artists — musicians, poets, filmmakers, puppeteers and sculptors — to present 5 one-of-a-kind performances.

Schedule:
Thursday, August 16
Our series opens with a NME début, as we welcome Edmonton music collective, Good Information will present a performance based on the Brian Eno/ Peter Schmidt concept of “oblique strategies”, with all five musicians receiving text-based directions for improvisation from a real-time app, as well as from Wee Book Inn books chosen by the audience.

Biboye Onanuga — drums, cymbals
Andre Affleck — keyboards

Friday, August 17 (Double Bill)
In part one, experimental musician Myles Bartel and spoken word poet Tab C.A. present their meditative and deeply compelling project, Moonbathers. In part two, in their first appearance with New Music Edmonton, we’ll immerse ourselves in the electronic drones and recitations of the Michael Wagner / Durell Smith Duo.

Tab C.A. — reciter
Myles Bartel — electronics

Durell Smith — reciter
Michael Wagner — electronics

Saturday, August 18
The Time Travelers Three: “Three-Four Time Space Continuum”, with a magical combination of puppets, film, electronic sound, a science fiction theme and just maybe some audience participation, promises a fun and engaging event.

Simeon Blimke — electronics
Demi Dupri — audio-visual
Ianna Ings — puppetry, sounds

Friday, August 24
We are delighted to present the first performance of A-rhythmia, an ensemble of 2 flutes, percussion and voice. They will present I am. Still. Alive. The Wee Book Inn will be filled with amazing sounds and a moving theme as the ensemble takes its inspiration, and material, from the moving and revealing blogs of heart transplant recipient, Jillianne Code.

Chenoa Anderson — flute
Jane Berry — voice
Mark Segger — percussion

Saturday, August 25
Closing off our 2018 Fringe series will be an “all-stars” group comprised of members of the above ensembles and visual artist Roseanna Joy Nay as they create something new especially for our closing night performance. Expect the unexpected, as they say! And don’t be surprised to find yourself in a splendid circus of words, sound, movement and live sculpture!

Alison Grant-Preville — flute
Durell Smith — reciter
Tab CA — reciter
Simeon Blimke — electronics
